The UNINVITED

The UNINVITED is an AMAIS project that involves a series of installations and exhibitions aimed at exploring and challenging society’s perspective on accessibility, inclusion, and disability.

Accessibility and inclusive design are often viewed as parallel themes to architecture, intersecting rarely or only in “special” cases, typically at the end of the project when the design process is complete. As a result, accessibility retrofitting (special modifications for people with disabilities) become localized solutions.

However, if we shift our perspective on “disability” to one that considers it as a mismatch between a person’s abilities and the environment, we might better understand how many of us are truly affected by the lack of accessibility of the built environment.

The installation invites us to reflect on what it means to be mismatched, excluded, or different from the standards in relation to the built environment.

The installation is composed of several walls:

Wall 1

  • Position in society: perception of accessibility / biases about accessibility.
  • Personal experience with the accessibility of the built environment.
  • Instructions for completion.
  • Ball of yarn.

Wall 2 – Visual and tactile statistics

  • Series of questions and possible answers.

Wall 3 – Curatorial statement

Wall 4 – Human mosaic

  • Exercise in defining users.
  • Zinc-plated board with a series of hexagons displaying user characteristics.
  • Visitors are invited to create their own story by connecting experiences using the yarn.
