SUMMARY:IHCD Webinar: From Architect to Systems Builder: Designing Inclusion in Difficult Contexts
DESCRIPTION:In this Institute for Human Centered Design Global webcast\, I trace my journey from architect to systems builder through my work to advance inclusive design in Romania\, a context where laws\, strategies\, and funding exist on paper\, yet accessibility remains deeply inadequate in practice. \nStarting from a personal turning point that led me to found AMAIS more than a decade ago\, I explore how meaningful inclusion depends not only on design\, but on a wider ecosystem of institutions\, education\, resources\, community trust\, and advocacy. \nReflecting on projects\, impact\, failures\, and lessons learned across public administration\, professional practice\, academia\, and participatory work\, I argue that the architect’s role today extends beyond creating spaces. It also means enabling systems of change. \nThe webcast offers a grounded perspective on what difficult contexts can teach us globally about building the foundations for more inclusive futures.

SUMMARY:Reflections from the Universal Design Conference 2024 in Oslo
DESCRIPTION:Between the 20th-22nd of November\, I had the opportunity of participating in the Universal Design Conference in Oslo\, where I presented two projects that are very close to my heart: The Empathy Retreat and The Inclusive Waterfront in Mahmudia\, alongside my colleague\, Iulian Canov. The positive reactions and insightful feedback from the attendees were both humbling and encouraging\, reaffirming that I am on the right track with my work. \nOne of the most emotional highlights of the conference was the chance to meet\, in person\, some of the authors whose work has inspired me for over a decade. These encounters were both inspiring and motivating\, making me even more passionate about pushing for change and inclusion in design. \nA special thank you to the Bufdir (The Norwegian Directorate for Children\, Youth and Family Affairs) organizing team for their meticulous planning and execution of such a phenomenal event. The entire experience was a testament to the power of collaboration and shared goals in advancing the universal design movement. \nAs I journeyed back to Romania\, I was filled with mixed emotions. While I am incredibly optimistic and energized by the amazing people working tirelessly to advance inclusive and universal design\, I also feel a sense of sadness. Hearing about the substantial investments in research and the strong support from public administrations in other countries has reminded me of the challenges we face in Romania. There is still much work to be done\, but this experience has only strengthened my commitment to advocating for change in my own country. \nSome key moments from the conference that will stay with me include: \n💡 Jutta Treviranus‘ groundbreaking talk on how we can train AI to overcome the human biases that often lead to exclusion.\n💡 Jasmien Herssens‘ thought-provoking perspective on incorporating universal design principles into architecture education.\n💡 The Bevica Foundation\, led by Camilla Ryhl and her team\, and their impressive work in supporting a network of impactful researchers in Denmark.\n💡 Dr. Janice Rieger Riegler‘s innovative approach to accessibility dis-audits\, opening up new conversations about improving accessibility in everyday life.\n💡 Reconnecting with my incredible colleagues from UIA’s Architecture for All Working Group\, Delfín Jiménez Martín and Christiaan Zandstra.\n💡 The inspiring public space accessibility research being carried out by Gaurav Raheja and his team at the Laboratory of Inclusive Design in India.\n💡 Yanki Lee‘s workshop on universal design research frameworks and the search for tools to create solutions for inclusive spaces and products.\n💡 The powerful message from Valerie Fletcher\, head of the Institute for Human-Centered Design\, who emphasized the importance of a united front to drive mindset shifts around inclusive design. \nWhile I could write pages about each presentation\, these are just a few moments that deeply resonated with me and reaffirmed the importance of collective action and shared knowledge in making the world a more inclusive place. \nIf you’re interested in learning more about the projects\, presentations\, and ideas from #UD2024\, I’ve shared additional information below. I invite you to explore the Compendium from the conference: Compendium Link\, the Proceedings: Proceedings Link\, and support the Norway Declaration 2024: Norway Declaration Link. \nTogether\, we can help create a future where inclusion is at the heart of design. 💡🌍

SUMMARY:Talk on Public Space Accessibility After "I Didn’t See You There" @ Urban Eye Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:On a thought-provoking evening at the UrbanEye Film Festival\, I had the privilege of speaking alongside Alex Tache\, an IT specialist and activist for the rights of people with disabilities. The discussion\, moderated by Ruxandra Mateescu from Supereroi printre noi\, followed the screening of the documentary “I Didn’t See You There” by Reid Davenport. \nThe film\, shot entirely from the perspective of the director—who uses a wheelchair—offers a deeply personal and emotional lens on the invisibility of disability\, the relationship between individuals and urban architecture\, and the societal biases ingrained in public spaces. It also reflects on the history of the “Freak Show\,” where atypical bodies were exploited for spectacle\, drawing poignant parallels with how urban environments today continue to exclude people with disabilities. \nKey Discussion Points\nOur conversation after the film delved into: \n\nThe accessibility of public spaces and the barriers faced by people with disabilities.\nHow architectural design influences inclusion or exclusion in cities.\nThe biases and stereotypes still present in society and how they are reflected in the built environment.\nPractical tools and empathy exercises that can help change perspectives and encourage inclusive practices in design and urban planning.\n\nA Shared Mission\nAs an architect specializing in inclusive design and founder of AMAIS\, I highlighted the importance of creating environments that empower human diversity and possible empathy exercises. Alex Tache brought invaluable insights from his lived experience\, reminding us why advocacy and collaboration are crucial to driving change. \nThis event reinforced the need for dialogue around accessibility and inclusion\, both in design and in how we\, as a society\, approach disability. I’m grateful to UrbanEye Film Festival and the incredible team behind this event for creating space for these vital conversations.

SUMMARY:Conference on Accessibility - The French Institute in Bucharest
DESCRIPTION:On October 9th\, I was invited to the French Institute to speak about accessibility in the built environment. The conference brought together a diverse group of participants\, including representatives from the press\, the Romanian National Film Center (CNC)\, the Romanian Film Office\, film distributors\, NGOs\, embassy representatives\, and partners of the French Institute. \nDuring my presentation\, I shared insights on the current state of accessibility in Romania\, the challenges we face\, and the strategies we use at AMAIS to improve inclusion. It was inspiring to discuss how we can create a society where people\, regardless of ability\, can fully enjoy cultural and public spaces. \nThe event was part of a broader conversation about the importance of inclusion\, particularly in cultural practices. I joined Ligia Soare and representatives from three associations who shared their incredible work and experiences in transforming our cities into more inclusive spaces. \nThis was an opportunity to showcase the impact of our work at AMAIS\, exchange ideas\, and advocate for accessibility as a fundamental aspect of urban planning and cultural development.

SUMMARY:My First URBACT Experience: Inclusive Design for Active Mobility
DESCRIPTION:I was thrilled to contribute as an ad hoc expert on inclusive design for active mobility for the Beyond the Urban Network with URBACT. This experience was incredibly rewarding\, as it focused on embedding inclusion and accessibility into both urban and rural mobility solutions. \nThe preparation for my presentation involved online meetings with the lead expert\, where I gained valuable insights into the network’s priorities. This helped me tailor the presentation and workshop structure to address the specific needs of the participants. A strong emphasis was placed on accessibility challenges faced by people with disabilities and how inclusive design can bridge these gaps. \nTo enrich the workshop experience\, I invited two guests with mobility and visual impairments to share their personal experiences of navigating inaccessible public spaces and transport systems. Their stories were powerful\, highlighting the real-life obstacles they face daily and the pivotal role cars play due to a lack of accessible alternatives. Their testimonies deeply resonated with participants\, sparking a more engaged and insightful discussion than anticipated. \nAlthough we didn’t have time to complete the accessibility analysis during the workshop\, we collectively decided to continue the discussion individually. This gave participants additional time to reflect on the challenges shared and develop practical solutions tailored to their contexts. \nAs part of this effort\, I also drafted an article\, “Turning Accessibility and Inclusion into Measurable Factors in Active Mobility” \n\narticle direct url https://urbact.eu/articles/turning-accessibility-and-inclusion-measurable-factors-active-mobility\n\nThe article provides context on accessibility considerations\, practical examples of overcoming barriers\, and actionable insights to inspire URBACT networks to foster inclusive mobility solutions. \nThis experience has been deeply inspiring\, and I’m grateful to URBACT for the opportunity to collaborate on such meaningful work. The feedback from the workshop and the article will play a foundational role in supporting the network’s continued efforts toward accessibility and inclusion in mobility.
